Eat Big? Win Big! Then Eat Big Again.

add to kirtsy

Did you eat something recently that knocked you on your ass and made you say "WOW"? (In a good way OR a bad way) Was it at a Portland restaurant? Was it in your kitchen? I want to hear about it!

Tell me about it by posting a comment on this entry and be entered into a drawing to win a $50 gift certificate to the new-ish Italian restaurant Mercato in NW Portland. They have pizza, panini, and pasta and a plethora of gelato. You've got nothing to lose.

Let's hear it Portland!

**Please comment by Wednesday, April 30th. The drawing will be on May 1st.

Let's see... The peanut encrusted torchon of Foie on grilled banana bread at Le Pigeon was fantastic; There's a good Mac & Cheese with beef short ribs (great tater tots as well) on Ten-01's happy hour menu; Chili corndogs in my own kitchen (these were sausage casings stuffed with North Carolina style chili, rolled in cornmeal batter and deep-fried on a stick); I could go on...

A simple chicken dressed in s&p and lemon, grilled on the BBQ in between hailstorms. It was the juiciest, smokiest (in the best way), crispiest-skin chicken I've ever had. Wow.

Like you Lizzy, watching the Food Network while at the gym is one of the only things getting me through 30 minutes on the elliptical machine (that and a shamefully purchased copy of US Weekly). Last weekend I saw Giada make a grapefruit/onion/olive salad that looked odd enough to try - and it was actually delicious, totally fresh, citrusy, and almost summery enough to distract me from the pouring rain outside last night. Who knew that drizzling olive oil over a grapefruit could do so much.

I love your skinny foodie blog, by the way - I am a frequent anonymous reader and am right there with you in the struggle!

All the comments have made me really hungry! I am going to keep this simple. The other day I had (for the first time in years) a beautifully toasted English muffin slathered with butter! Yummy!

Hi Erika's sister...this is Carmen from Grants Pass and I need to tell you about a little sip of heaven I recently experienced. There's this 1950's type restaurant in Grants Pass that serves a wide variety of milk shakes. The other day I told my husband I was off to the 'store', but instead went to have a chocolate peanut butter shake from Jimmy's Drive-in...ahhh Nirvana. After a day chasing two young boys around that shake made me melt.

PS I'm coming to Portland in May and I heart gelato!!

I read your blog many times and I like the way to describe the restaurant food and the service, I liked the tortelloni with creamy tomato sauce at Pastini Pastaria in the Bridgeport mall. Although I ordered something else I tried some from my friend and fell in love with it. It is nice to have restaurants who can make a vegetarian meal from their non-vegetarian menu and that is also what I like about Pastini Pastaria....good luck to all who comment.

We smoked a pork shoulder on the grill last weekend that, as I said in my post, made our "guests' eyes roll back in their heads and [made] them fall off their chairs moaning like they're possessed." Perfect!

The lemon-ricotta pancakes at Jam -- holy mackerel! And yes, I read your blog all the time. I've even linked to it from mine!

A couple weeks ago, I went to Opposable Thumb Cafe on Belmont for the first time. I wasn't expecting much. I wanted gelato more than anything but needed lunch too. I was pleasantly surprised by the smoked gouda + onions (compote?) + pear sandwich. And I actually didn't like the gelato much. On the same day, I also had a coconut cupcake from Saint Cupcake. That was AMAZING!

Over Christmas, my dad and I made French onion soup. I didn't even know you could make it from scratch or where to begin. We used a recipe from Cooks Illustrated. They found a way to caramelize the onions in the oven rather than the stovetop. It still takes about 4 hours but you don't have to watch the pot so much. Once we ate it, we were very sad we hadn't made a double batch. Part of the fun was learning something new and cooking with my dad, something I don't get to do much anymore. And we finished off the meal with Haagen Dazs Cinnamon Dulce de Leche ice cream. Go buy a pint now!
