Food, Inc. Giveaway!

add to kirtsy

The movie Food, Inc. is opening on Friday the 12th in selected cities and on Friday the 19th here in Portland at Cinema 21. To find out when it's playing in your city, click here.

This is an important movie for people to see, regardless of your politics, religion or even your eating lifestyle. I saw it a couple of months ago at an advance screening and it really woke my mind up to the realities of the food industry. But what I loved about it is that it doesn't just complain about the problem. It gives you solutions and how you can help and improve the food industry's future in our country.

So. We're giving away two books: The companion book for the movie, Food, Inc. and Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser, who is interviewed in the movie.

To win, you just need to comment on this post, telling me your most favorite thing to buy at the farmers' market. I'll pick 2 winners on Friday, June 12th (in only two days!) And each winner will receive a set of books.

Can't wait to hear what you like to buy!

La-la-la-LAVENDER!

Not technically food, but OH is it EVER the cherry atop a farmers' market sundae!

Uh what DON'T I like to buy at the farmer's market!! I love me some local honey, greens because I don't grow them myself (yet) and berries. I have friends that have organic beef and eggs so I still get local dairy and meat. Another interesting tidbit, our farmer's market now allows the use of the food stamp link card to purchase local food etc. I think that is a great option for people to get healthier food!!

I have seen the movie FFN but I haven't read the book that goes with Food Inc. Very interesting I am sure.

Oh I'd die without my farmer's market and grower's market! I always buy fresh juices, nest eggs, and all my meats from the Amish.

I love to buy carrots (sometimes just because the tops are so gorgeous and you never get to see them like that at the store), peaches and most especially... cherries!

First I would say is basil. You can get a nice big bunch of it for cheap. In the super market it only comes in small amounts and it's expensive. This year the farmers market I go to has Jersey cows milk. Very tasty. I get it in the glass bottle that I return each week that the dairy can clean and reuse. And they give you a discount when you bring back the bottle. It's great.

We have a CSA share, so we have our veggie needs mostly covered. I like to pick up cheese and some other pre-made items like vinegars, pesto, bread, etc.

Thanks for the giveaway! Can't wait to see this movie!

Did you get a chance to hear Marion Nestle speak a few weeks ago in Portland? She is the author of What to Eat, and her presentation was amazing. Basically: stay out of the center "maze" of the grocery store and only eat real food. She talked about Food, Inc. quite a bit.

My favorite thing to buy at the farmers market? The think I haven't tried before.

I'm so psyched about this movie.

I think my favorite thing to buy at the farmer's market are the vegetables--fresh spinach, carrots, bok choy, radishes, asparagus...They taste better than what you can get in the grocery store, and I'm way more inspired to get my proper dose of veggies if I know they're local and tasty.

I am also a Farmer's Market flower fan. I love to go each week... just to have fresh flowers to set on my table all week. I also love fresh spices, basil, oregano, dill, thyme. Mmmm. Can't wait to go this weekend!

Flowers and baked goods!
The farmers market is a great place to sample new baked things and so nice to support the local bakers who are there:). Of course that's not all I buy, but they are high up on the list!

I love it all at the farmer's market. If I had to pick one thing, I guess it would be the rainier cherries when they get in season. Now I want a pie!

Only one thing? That's a tough one. How about one category - I can do that . . . wild mushrooms!!! There's nothing like the woodsy earthy smell of fresh mushrooms.
Thanks for posting the info on Food Inc. at Cinema 21. Some friends & I are planning a field trip to see it and meet for a review/discussion afterwards.

I love farmer's markets, a great place to go with the family...If I only had to pick 2 things I would go with plant starts for my garden and baked goods.

if i had to say one thing- it would likely be hazelnuts . . . which i use to make biscotti . . . or kale which is great roasted in the oven . . . yum!

but in reality, i love going to farmers markets to get the fixins for a fresh, local + seasonal weekend meal - and the best part is that it varies every time i go!

a classic, however, is fresh handmade pasta with asparagus and mushrooms . . . and strawberry shortcake : )
