Hello January, Goodbye December(ists)!

add to kirtsy

Well. It's January 16th today. We are two and a half weeks into the new year. How's it feeling so far? I've been eating lots of great food, starting back to school and cooking a lot. So much fun. Because it's been such a great first two weeks of 2008, I figured it was time for a giveaway.

So here's the deal. Comment on this post and tell me your favorite food you've eaten in 2008 so far and where you ate it (name of the restaurant, your house, etc.) and on Sunday, I'll do a drawing from all the comments and the winner will get TWO tickets to The Decemberists concert at the Crystal Ballroom on Wednesday, January 23rd. (That's next week!) If you haven't seen them in concert, you want to - they are some of the best performers around, AND they are from Portland. Hometown shows rock.

Can't wait to hear what you've all been eating!

I'm not really eligible for the contest... since I won't be in town for the concert... BUT... the best food I've eaten so far this year was a homemade coconut chicken curry over jasmine rice. super soupy, the perfect amount of curry and topped with crunchy cashews. mmm. my mouth is watering just thinking about it!

I would loooove tickets to The Decemberists. My fingers are crossed.
The best food I've eaten in 2008 was at the Bread and Ink Cafe a couple of weekends ago. The black bean cakes were delish - with the perfect amount of creme fraiche. And a lovely latte to follow.

I haven't really been out to dinner much yet this year, partially because I enjoy cooking so much. especially soup. my favorite soup I've made so far this year is Winter Squash Soup with Gruyere Croutons. both butternut and acorn squashes, spicy cumin, ground ginger, fresh thyme, and fresh sage, combined with the melted, toasty goodness of the Gruyere Croutons was so amazing, I'm actually cooking it for a second time this month, tonight! find pics and recipe here.

I have to admit that I've eaten rather poorly so far this year. I'd have to say my last favorite food was eaten prior to the New Year. My Polenta at Lovely Hula Hands was scrumptious!

I LOVE the Decemberists and I love FOOD! And I'm free Wednesday....

How to make this short? I've actually stumbled on some great food already this year.
#1 Seafood omelet, stuffed with shrimp and crab, topped with hollandaise sauce. The catch? You have to drive to Lincoln City, to the Wildflower Grill, on 101, 1/4 mile east of the McDonald's, in a little brown house. (Sorry to mention McDonald's on a fine-dining blog, but those giant golden arches are easy to spot.)
#2 Coconut soup, at House of Lamthong Authentic Thai in Hillsboro, 1503 S.E. Tualitin Valley Hwy.
#3 At home, I made Costco's salmon burgers, on costco's whole wheat buns, with Costco's Thai rub (from the deli section.)

Pick me, pick me!!!

I went to an Epiphany Feast in celebration of, well, the Epiphany. The entire meal was fantastic with succulent meat, perfectly textured mashed sweet potatoes and various delicious salads. But the best thing was my friend Julie's pumpkin bread pudding with bourbon toffee sauce. Oh my goodness. That stuff is addictive and not just because of the bourbon that doesn't really cook out. Perfect mix of flavors. I think I finally found a bread pudding that I like as much as my own.

I will bow out of the running for the Decemberists tickets, because I've seen them a bunch of times already, including last year's show at the Crystal, so I'll sit on my hands and give someone else a chance. :)

There's a brand new place over on East Burnside called East Burn. Not the most inspired name, but it's a great place. It's on 18th and Burnside, in the place formerly known as Nocturnal. For lunch the other day, I had ravioli stuffed with grilled onions and bell peppers, with shrimp and spinach and rosemary and roasted red peppers over the top. It was really stellar, and I highly recommend the place, based on that alone.

I guess I would have to say that my favorite meal this year comes down to a tie between the "Pigboard" at Clyde Common: Pork belly, stone ground mustard, pickled onions and an ice cold shot of vodka; and a dinner I made for some friends who came in from Toledo for a wedding back in July: Paella cooked on the grill. By the way, you can take me out of the running for the tickets, as I'll be working that night.

HURRAY! Did Kristin tell you I screamed on the phone?

And that I want to take you out to dinner? I'm meeting with her Wednesday, so we can do it then, or another time if you're busy. At any rate, she could bring me the tix.

What a sweet giveaway!!!
